The 3Rs of Autism include Reciprocity, Restricted Behavior, and Repetitive Behavior. Let’s understand them in detail.
Reciprocity
Reciprocity means how a child interacts with their environment. Children, when diagnosed with autism, have strong minds and agendas and want to do their own things. They reciprocate if we are interested in the agenda at hand, but if we are not interested, they might either go back to what they're doing and show less interaction or they might just do something that interests them and become repetitive.
Reciprocity in a child starts from 4 months of age, usually when they start to look around, become aware of what is happening around them, make sounds, start vocalising, and begin to gain attention towards people and show interest in what is around them. By 6 months, they start to explore by picking things up and putting them in their mouths, which is their way of interacting with their environment. Slowly, by nine to ten months, they start playing, and reciprocating.
We, at Geniuslane measure a child’s reciprocity and understand their functioning level, providing a program to parents that they can easily implement at home. This program has easy-to-follow steps so that the child can start reciprocating.
Restricted Behavior
The second R is restricted behavior. When children have autism, they will restrict themselves with certain foods, sleep, or people, and that is usually about how they feel. A child with autism will often feel distressed for no apparent reason with normal things which other children would be just fine with. The child is trying to avoid a lot of situations and people because they feel distressed, and this affects how they interact with the world, look after themselves, and eat.
It is very important that this restrictive behavior is not addressed by force. If you feel disturbed by the restrictive behavior and want things to change immediately, things will only get worse and worse.
It's really important to recognize that a child with autism will exhibit restrictive behavior. This restriction could be with their verbal communication, diet, sleep, where they go, and how they behave. Restricted behavior is a very important part, and often people treat it separately, addressing diet, sleep, eating, and making friends separately. Therapies like speech therapy, behavior therapy, and sensory therapy are often designed separately, but the main core is managing restrictive behavior.
Repetitive Behavior
From an early age, children with autism can show a lot of repetitive behavior with their hands, face, or by making noises and repeating sounds. A lot of the repetitive behavior makes no sense and seems to have no reason. Children will engage in repetitive behavior to adjust to their environment and calm themselves down. The more they repeat, the calmer they are. If you try to stop the repetitive behavior and improve their distinctive behavior, the more they go into repetitive mode.
Understanding autism is very important, and if your autism program is missing the 3Rs, later on, children will be more anxious, showing more obsessive difficulties or even more psychotic difficulties, where they are more out of line with what is happening around them. The brain develops in a certain way when children have autism, and our early intervention program helps in addressing those 3Rs.
Conclusion
The Geniuslane Targeted Autism Care Program emphasizes the importance of addressing the 3 Rs: Reciprocity, Restricted Behavior, and Repetitive Behavior. By focusing on these core areas, parents and caregivers can better support children with autism, helping them to interact more effectively with their environment and reduce anxiety and distress. Early intervention is key to fostering positive development and improving overall well-being.
